Is Las Vegas Safe for Tourists?
I’m traveling to Vegas, and I’m worried about safety.
Said no one ever.
The reason so few people are concerned about safety in Vegas is because it’s a sprawling city that almost never sleeps. In such a populated place, people assume that crimes can’t exist. But what if people are wrong? What if your concerns for safety in Vegas are legit?
The Popular Areas are Pretty Safe
If you’re in popular areas, such as Fremont Street or the Strip or near Mandalay Bay, you have little to worry about. These are safe and heavily scrutinized locations. And with casinos, you can always be sure that there will be security personnel out and about. Additionally, the traffic in these areas—and we mean people—is enough to discourage any criminal.
Needless to say, the only money you’ll lose is inside the casinos.
While you will find tourists and travelers attesting to the security offered by the city, there’s also this: Nevada’s crime rate is higher than the national average. The national average is 3.7—Nevada’s is 5.4%. That should put things into perspective.
So what we suggest is this:
Follow Standard Rules
Use common sense and do whatever you’d do in any city to be safe. Be mindful of things such as:
- Don’t accept drinks from strangers
- Make sure you aren’t being followed
- Share location with a friend
- Keep your phone charged
- Keep pepper spray in your bag
- Carry a map
- Keep your GPS on at all times
- Keep your valuables close
- Keep your bags and luggage away, securely stored
- Follow the buddy system—if you have a buddy
