Welcoming the Year of the Rat: Celebrating Chinese New Year in Washington DC

Chinese New Year celebrations aren’t just restricted to China. The Lunar Year is celebrated all across the world, especially in the US. 2020 marks the Year of the Rat, and we can’t wait for the festivities to kick off this year!

If you’re in Washington DC this weekend, then you have to check out the celebrations happening across the city in honor of the Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year Family Day at the Kennedy Center

Start the festivities on January 25th by heading over to the Kennedy Center with your family for some quality time together. The free Lunar New Year party being held there in honor of the Chinese New Year isn’t one to miss and will host a number of fun activities. These include sugar painting, marionette puppets, Cantonese opera, red lantern making, and an exhibit featuring opera costumes.

Lunar New Year Celebration at the Freer|Sackler

To welcome the Year of the Rat, the Smithsonian’s Freer|Sackler is hosting a vibrant collection of Asian art on January 26th, followed by acrobats, live musical performances, and puppetry. You’ll also have the chance to try out some traditional, spicy dishes that are part of the Chinese cuisine.

DC Chinese New Year Parade

This is probably the most awaited event happening this year to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The annual DC Chinese New Year Parade is the highlight of the Lunar Year festivities, featuring firecrackers, floats, folk dancers, and kung fu demonstrations.

Chinese New Year Children Story Tales

Also happening on January 26th is the storytelling session for kids at the Xfinity Chinatown Store in downtown DC. Stop by at the venue with your kids on your way to the parade and have them indulge in some paper folding while also enjoy traditional story tales & Chinese customs. There’ll be plenty of candy and popcorn to go around for everyone!

Chinese New Year Family Day at the Smithsonian American Art Museum

Can’t get enough of the family fun going around this New Year? The Smithsonian American Art Museum has another family-centered day to add to the festivities. The free event will be held on February 1st in Chinatown and is yet another chance for you to commemorate the Lunar New Year with your family. From dough sculpting, paper lantern making, and traditional papercutting, to mask coloring and calligraphy, there won’t be a dull moment! And if these activities weren’t enough, then there’s also a scavenger hunt and acrobatic troupe to look forward to.
